Callas – Paris, 1958: from rediscovered reels to the world's cinemas

On 19 December 1958, Maria Callas made her Paris debut at the Palais Garnier, before a hall that held, as the newspapers put it, le Tout-Paris — the President of the Republic, Jean Cocteau, Charlie Chaplin, Brigitte Bardot, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. She sang Norma, Il trovatore, Il barbiere di Siviglia, then a fully staged second act of Tosca. One night, one city conquered.

The evening was filmed and broadcast — then the images all but disappeared from view, surviving in copies that did the legend no justice.

The discovery

In 2021, the original 16 mm reels of the gala were rediscovered, together with a sound source of far higher quality than anything previously known. For the Foundation, whose mission is precisely the preservation and restoration of Maria Callas's audiovisual heritage, the way forward was clear: bring the evening back — entirely, and at the level of quality it deserved.

The restoration

The restoration produced Callas – Paris, 1958 in 4K, and in colour — frame by frame, from the original film elements, with the recovered sound remastered to modern cinema standards. What emerged is not an archive clip but a film: the tension of the entrance, the gowns, the faces in the boxes, and a voice at the height of its powers, restored to presence.

The centenary release

Callas – Paris, 1958 had its world premiere at the Rome Film Festival in October 2023, before a worldwide cinema release for the centenary of Maria Callas's birth — in France with Pathé Live, on 2 and 3 December 2023, one hundred years to the day.
